How we test products at ShudhMart
Our goal is a published lab report for every product we sell, matched to the batch you receive. This page states how far we have come and how we intend to close the gap.
ShudhMart tests products in three stages: an ingredient check against a published banned list, third-party laboratory testing at an accredited laboratory, and batch-by-batch testing with the report published on the product page. Every product we sell sits in one of the three.
Each stage is stricter than the one before it, and the product page tells you which stage that product has reached.
Ingredients check
Applies to: every product on this site — food, supplements, personal care and home care
We reject a product if it contains any of the ingredients below. This is the first check we run, before we discuss price or volume with a supplier.
There are two lists. The first covers food and supplements. The second covers personal care and home care, which includes handwash, dishwash liquid and laundry products. A few bans appear on both lists because the reason for them does not change with the category.
What we will not stock in food and supplements
Synthetic colours
India permits eight coal-tar colours in food. We permit none. Colour is usually added to hide the age, grade or origin of a raw material.

Synthetic preservatives and antioxidants
We use salt, sugar, vinegar, ascorbic acid and tocopherols. Those are preservatives too. The ban covers synthetic antimicrobials and petroleum-derived antioxidants. These hold shelf life open past the point the food can hold it on its own.

Sulphur-treated raw material
The raw material is often fumigated before it arrives. A ban on sulphites in the finished product does nothing about that. Fumigation is common in Indian supply chains and rarely appears on a label.

Industrial fats and oils
Fat is usually the cheapest part of a cheap product. We select oils by extraction method rather than by label claim.

Process and packaging
Few Indian sellers publish this. A fumigant caused the largest recent recalls of Indian spices abroad, not an ingredient.

What we will not stock in personal care and home care
Harsh and cheap surfactants
Foam is not cleaning. The cheapest way to make a product foam is also the harshest on skin, and in the case of ethoxylated surfactants it carries by-products from the manufacturing process itself.

Petroleum-derived emollients
Mineral oil is the cheapest way to make a product feel rich on the skin. We screen for mineral oil residues in food. It is the same substance in a lotion, so it is treated the same way.

Synthetic preservatives and antibacterials
These are the most common causes of contact allergy in Indian home and personal care. A daily-use antibacterial adds no benefit over plain soap for a healthy household.

Fragrance, colour and appearance additives
An optical brightener does not clean a fabric. It deposits on the fabric so the eye reads it as whiter. That is the same trick as colour in food, and we treat it the same way.

What leaves the house through the drain
A handwash or a laundry liquid is used once and then goes into the water. What it is made of does not stop being our concern at that point.

Neither list has exceptions. If a listed product breaches either one, tell us and we will remove the product. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.
Lab tested
Means: the product has been lab tested at least once
Applies to: about half the catalogue today, and every new listing from here
Stage 1 reads the label. Stage 2 does not rely on it. Samples go to an accredited third-party laboratory, not our own, and are tested in three ways.
Test for adulteration
Identity and adulteration testing. Not whether the product is safe, but whether it is the thing named on the front of the pack. All of these are common in India: argemone oil in mustard, vanaspati in ghee, starch and chalk in ground spices, lead chromate and Sudan dyes in turmeric and chilli. A customer cannot see any of them. None of them appear on a label.
Test for nutritional profile
Nutritional and active-compound analysis. For oils, the fatty acid profile. For supplements, an assay of the active compound at the stated dose. A number on a pack means nothing until someone measures it. Until then it is a claim, not a measurement.
Test for heavy metals, pesticides and aflatoxins
Contaminant screening: heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic), pesticide residues, aflatoxins, and mineral oil residues where the category calls for them.

Where we test, and against which limits
Testing is done at NABL-accredited third-party laboratories only.
Where FSSAI sets a maximum limit, we report against it. Where our own limit is stricter, we give you both numbers.
Batch tested
Means: every batch is tested before release
Applies to: a growing share of the catalogue — the standard we are working toward for everything
One test describes one sample. You may buy a product for years, but a single report on it describes one batch from one date. It does not guarantee the batches that came after.
Stage 3 means we test every production batch before release. We publish the certificate of analysis for that batch on the product page. The batch code on your pack matches the batch code on the report.

Not every product has reached this stage. Our goal is a certificate of analysis for every product we sell. Until a product reaches Stage 3, its page states the stage it is at.
What happens when something fails
Any seller can publish the reports that passed. The test is what happens to the ones that failed.
- A failed batch is not listed. It is not discounted, not moved to the retail store, and not sold through another channel. It does not reach you.
- Third-party brands are tested at random. We did not make these products, so we do not test every batch. Instead we take stock from our own shelves without notice and send it for testing.
- A third-party brand that fails is delisted. It returns only after a clean re-test.
- We drop a supplier that fails twice. Price and length of relationship do not change this.
Our record so far
Three products have failed our checks so far, on ingredient or quality grounds. None of them were listed. No third-party product has yet failed a random audit. We publish these counts because a policy with no number behind it cannot be checked.
How to read the reports yourself
Certificates are published on the product page of the product they describe. Each one is a laboratory document, not a summary written by us. Four things are worth finding.
- The batch number. Compare it with the pack in your kitchen. If they differ, the report is for a different batch than the one you own.
- The sample date. A report from three years ago describes a three-year-old batch, whatever its numbers say.
- The accreditation. Look for the NABL logo and the scope on the letterhead. A laboratory without accreditation can still produce a report that looks convincing.
- "Not detected" and its limit. ND means the substance was not found. Now look at the limit of quantification printed beside it. That number tells you how low the test could see. A test that cannot see very low proves little by finding nothing.
What we do not claim
- Half the catalogue has not been lab tested. Those products passed ingredient screening and nothing further, and their pages say so.
- No laboratory tests for everything. A pesticide panel covers a fixed list of compounds. The panel would not find a residue outside that list.
- A sample is not every unit. Stage 3 narrows this gap batch by batch. It does not remove it.
Common questions
Does ShudhMart use palm oil?
No. Palm oil, palm kernel oil, palmolein and every fraction of them are banned in all products we sell.
Are ShudhMart products lab tested?
About half the catalogue currently has third-party laboratory results. Every product page states which of the three stages that product has reached.
Which laboratory does ShudhMart use?
Testing is done at NABL-accredited third-party laboratories. We do not run our own laboratory and we do not test our own products.
Do ShudhMart products contain SLS, parabens or artificial fragrance?
No. SLS and SLES, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, MIT and CMIT, phthalates and undisclosed fragrance are all banned across personal care and home care.
What happens if a batch fails a test?
It is not listed. A failed batch is not discounted, not moved to the retail store, and not sold through another channel.
Where can I see the lab report for the product I bought?
On the product page. Match the batch code printed on your pack to the batch code on the published report.

You cannot verify this page from the page itself. Take any product we sell to any NABL-accredited laboratory and test it.
If a product fails against the claims on its own page, tell us. We will have the batch tested by a third party and publish the result.
